Description

Riddings Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is constructed of ashlar and coursed squared stone, topped with graduated stone slate roofs. The building has two storeys and two bays, with the left bay being circular in shape and the right bay rectangular. The layout features a lobby entry plan, which probably originated in the 16th century and was partially rebuilt in the 18th century.

On the right-hand bay, there are quoins and a board door located on the left side within a plain stone surround. To the right of the door, there is a wide two-light recessed flat-faced mullion window with 20th-century casements, and a similar window is found on the first floor. Additionally, there is a blocked-in chamfered doorway and above it, the remains of a blocked-in chamfered window. The right bay also features shaped kneelers, stone coping, and an end stack.

The left-hand bay has a small 24-pane sash window set in a chamfered stone surround, with another sash window on the first floor and an end stack to the left. At the rear of the building, the left-hand bay includes a pointed arched opening with a moulded and chamfered surround, and on the first floor, there is a blocked-in single-light chamfered window.

Inside the right-hand bay, there is a large inglenook fireplace with a segmental arch and voussoirs, along with a blocked fire window leading to the lobby. In the left-hand bay, there is a blocked-in chamfered doorway. Historically, the cottage may have served as a hunting lodge associated with the Bolton Abbey estate.
