Description
Rose Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the early 18th century and has undergone some internal alterations and additions. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with a pantile roof and features two low storeys and two bays, following a baffle-entry plan. The building has herringbone-tooled quoins, and the left side has a board door with a herringbone-tooled lintel above it. On the right side, there are two 2-light, 8-pane side-sliding sash windows on each floor, with the ground floor windows being larger and having 2-piece herringbone-tooled lintels. The kneelers are plain, projecting blocks, and there are brick stacks at both ends.
At the rear, an outshut has been added on the left, while the right part of the cottage was heightened in the 20th century. The right return features a plinth and quoins, with a fragment of masonry displaying medieval decoration incorporated between two of the quoins at the junction with the outshut. Both gables of the returns have large, stepped, herringbone-tooled edging stones.
Inside, there is an inglenook at the left end that includes a headpost, bressummer, and bench, and it contains a 19th-century iron range with a water boiler and oven set in a stone surround. The principal rafters are visible upstairs.
