Description

The Seven Stars is a house located on Main Street in Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe. It likely dates back to the 16th century, with 20th-century additions and alterations. The building features a cruck frame that is clad in rendered stone and brick, with some surviving wattle and daub studding. The roof is covered with interlocking tiles from the 20th century.

The house has a baffle-entry plan and is a single storey with an attic, consisting of three cells, along with 20th-century additions to the rear that are not of special interest. Between the left-hand bays, there is a gabled stone porch from around 1980, which has a two-light window to the left and a three-light and a two-light window to the right, all of which are 20th-century side-sliding sashes. The building also features three 20th-century gabled dormers with barge boards and finials. The end stacks and one stack on the ridge above the door are all rendered. There is a single-storey range attached to the left end that is not of special interest.

Inside, the cruck frame is visible, with the truss at the left end seen at attic level, featuring a tiebeam and collar. The truss between the central and right-hand cells is fully visible, with the rear cruck resting on a padstone, along with a tiebeam, collar, and part of the wattle and daub infill with studs at attic level. The truss at the right end has only the front inch visible. There is a large-scantling ridge piece. The rear wall of the central cell has a stone plinth that supports close-studded infill, and this cell also contains stop-chamfered joists and a scarf-jointed chamfered spine beam.
