Description
The Cavendish Memorial is a memorial with a fountain, dated 1886. It is constructed of ashlar and has a hexagonal shape. The memorial is accessed by four steps leading to a plinth, which features offset gableted buttresses at each corner that rise above the parapets. A frieze below the eaves bears the inscription: "This fountain was erected by electors of the West Riding as a tribute to his memory, Frederick Charles Cavendish Born November 1836. Died May 1882." Between the buttresses, there are pointed arches on banded half-shafts with ogee-headed hoodmoulds. A fountain is located at the center of the base, and there is a gargoyle at each buttress level with the frieze. Above the frieze, an embattled parapet features blank cusped pointed-arched arcading, with a central coat of arms on each side. At the top, there is an open ogee lantern, crowned with a crocketed pinnacle on open gableted arches above the lantern.
