Description
Crooks Beck Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century, with alterations and the addition of a stair wing in the mid-18th century. The adjoining barn, garage, and byres are probably 18th-century additions. The building is constructed of pebble-dashed rubble and has a graduated slate roof. It is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay facade. The central panelled door is flanked by sash windows on both floors. The adjoining byre range at the north end has had garage doors added, with two byre doors to the right and a small opening above. The barn, which is at a right angle to the south return, features a plank door with a loft door above on its north elevation. The barn has stone copings and kneelers, while the house has stone end chimneys.
Inside the house, the front room on the south side has a painted ceiling that may be from the 17th century, featuring a large compass rose approximately six feet in diameter, with a circular border of flowers in roundels that is now painted over but still visible. There is a chair rail around the room, and the south wall has 18th-century oak panelling with a carved frieze. A 20th-century fireplace, which includes the original overmantel, is situated between fluted pilasters; a cupboard on the left has shaped shelves and a half-dome with foliate painting, while a wide full-height cupboard on the right originally concealed a folding bed. The bedroom above has similar cupboards and a panelled partition. The dog-leg stair features a cut string, turned balusters, square newels, and a ramped handrail. Most of the panelled doors are from the 17th century, with the remainder dating to the 18th century.
