Description

The Old Butchery is a cottage with an attached shop located on the east side of High Street in Twyford. It has a core that dates back to the 16th century, which has been refronted and extended in the 18th century. The building features a timber frame that is encased and extended in brick, and it has been later colourwashed or rendered. The roof is made of old plain tiles.

The structure consists of a three-bay building from the 16th century, with an early 18th-century cross-wing added to the right bay and a smaller shop from the late 18th century attached to the right side of the cross-wing. The left bay has been rebuilt as a garage, which includes double doors under a segmental arch. In the center bay, there is an early 19th-century six-panel door set in a segmental arch, with irregular 20th-century windows in older segmental head openings to the right. The building also features three gabled dormers with two lights each.

A stack is positioned between the center and right bays. The cross-wing has a large 20th-century three-light casement window and a 19th-century six-pane door with a rectangular fanlight to the right, along with a two-light casement window above and a hipped roof. The narrower wing includes a shop front with a large window and a door to the right, along with a signboard above, a two-light casement window above that, dentilled eaves, and a hipped roof.
