Description
Nos 4, 5, and 6 on Cliffe High Street are a row of houses that have been converted into shops. They date from the 17th century, possibly earlier, and were clad in the 19th century. The buildings are timber-framed, with the first floor of the left two bays clad in slate and the right four bays covered in mathematical tiles. The roof is plain tiled, featuring an end stack on the left and a ridge stack also on the left. There are four dormers on the left side, all gabled except for the right one, which has a segment-headed design. A wooden eaves cornice with modillions is present over the right two bays. The structure is two storeys high with attics only on the left side, displaying a regular six-window front with two sashes on the left and four first-floor bays in the centre and right. The late 19th-century shopfronts below have been altered, featuring large acanthus bracket mouldings flanking each window. There are four doors: a single glazed door on the left, a double glazed door in the centre, and a similar door on the right, along with a panelled door to the right of centre. Additionally, the first floor is clad in slate on the left and right two bays, with mathematical tiles in the centre two bays.
