Description
Nos 53 and 54 on Cliffe High Street are a pair of shops built in the early to mid 19th century. The buildings feature grey headers with red bands and dressings. They have platbands over both the first and second floors, and a coped parapet that conceals the roof. There are end stacks and a stack at the center of the ridge. The structure is three stories tall with a four-window front, which has a wider gap between the central windows and a vertical band of red bricks in the middle. The windows are sashes, although the ones on the left side of the first floor are truncated by a fascia board below. To the left, there is a deep early 20th-century shopfront with inset glazed doors, while the right side has a 20th-century shopfront that extends from the neighboring building, No 55, which is not listed. There is also a mid-19th-century extension to the left that is two stories high with one window. This pair of shops is included for its group value.
