Description
49 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century and is clad in 18th-century materials. The building is timber-framed, with plaster on the north side, red brick on the ground floor to the west, and grooved weather-boarding above. It features a plain tiled roof that is gabled to both ends. The house has two storeys, with five windows on the first floor to the west and one to the north, all of which are glazing bar sashes. The ground floor has 20th-century shop fronts on the north and west sides, and there is a half-glazed door located to the right of the centre on the west side.
Inside, the timber frame is mostly concealed. There is a very large cellar made of large squared stones laid in courses, which is said to have come from the Church of St. Mary-in-Foro that occupied this site before 1559, when the parish was merged with that of St. John-sub-Castro. A late 18th-century print indicates that the west side of the building originally had stonework with two pointed-arched windows featuring tracery.
