Description
No. 44 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 17th century and was refronted in the early 19th century. The exterior features channelled stucco with rusticated pilaster quoins and a small cornice with modillions below the eaves, topped by a slate roof. The building has three storeys and a three-window front, with the central windows being blind. The second floor has glazing bar sashes, while the first floor features tripartite sashes. There is a 20th-century double shop front with an inset two-thirds glazed door in the centre, and a large hood over the ground floor adorned with decorative wrought-iron cresting. A large decorative arm for a sign projects from the centre of the first floor, and there is a painted date of 1613 above the ground floor in the centre. Inside, there is a three-flight square open well staircase with slim turned balusters that have rounded knops, columnar newel posts, and an unramped flat rail.
