Description
Nos 53 and 54 High Street is a pair of houses that have been converted into shops. They date from the 15th century, with later modifications from the 16th or early 17th century, and were clad in the 19th century. The buildings are timber-framed and rendered, topped with a plain tiled roof. There is a brick stack on the left side behind the ridge and three hipped dormers. The structure features a jettied design over the ground and first floors, with the ground floor jetty being under-built. The buildings are two stories tall with attics, and the area above the first-floor jetty is blind, while there are shallow canted bays beneath the first-floor jetty. The windows are sashes throughout. The left side has a 20th-century single shopfront with a glazed door at the extreme left, and the right side has a 20th-century double shopfront with an inset central doorway. There is a wide carriage entrance on the extreme right that leads to a carriage yard behind the White Hart Hotel. Inside, there is a trussed purlin modified queen-post roof in the 15th-century rear block, which shows some smoke blackening.
