Description
The tower on Stanton Moor was built in 1832 for the Thornhill family of Stanton Hall. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone with gritstone dressings, quoins, and a plinth. The tower features a plain eaves band and plain parapets, although only remnants of the original embattlements remain on the south side. It is a single bay, square in plan, and three storeys high. The east facade includes a four-centred, arched doorcase that is now blocked, with a blank niche above that once held a plaque inscribed 'Earl Grey 1832' and decorated with a coronet. Above this, there is a tall arrow slit cross window, with similar windows on the other sides. The tower was built to commemorate the passing of the Reform Bill in honor of Earl Grey.
