Description
The former powder house, built around 1880, served as a magazine or dry powder store. It is constructed from coursed rubble gritstone with brick, featuring a cement-rendered blue brick tunnel vaulted roof. The building consists of a single chamber with an entrance on the east side and is designed to be 'over-constructed' to withstand explosions. The walls exhibit a noticeable batter, and there is a dressed stone eaves band. Inside, the roof is reinforced with heavy purlins, rafters, and shuttering, and it originally had an internal timber lining. This structure is a remarkable survival linked to the now-demolished Millclose lead mine.
