Description
The grotto located to the south of The Manor House in Stanton Woodhouse dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of tufa with stalactitic deposits. It has two storeys and an irregular plan. The upper level features a roughly U-shaped layout with a tufa arch to the north that leads into a paved tufa passageway. This passageway extends eastward to another tufa arch, which opens onto a viewing platform overlooking the lower level. To the west, the passageway curves into a parallel passage that includes three tufa arches on the south side.
The lower level, situated beneath the viewing platform, has tufa arches on the north and east sides. It also features a four-centred arched, ovolo moulded gritstone doorcase on the west side, which leads into a stone, barrel-vaulted underground chamber. To the south of the open area, there is a large hollow piece of tufa that forms a rough niche.
