Description

Caudwells Mill is a flour mill built in 1874, spanning a broad mill race. The building features rock-faced and plain sandstone with a Welsh slate roof. It is a rectangular structure with seven bays along its long side and stands three storeys tall. The east elevation includes various brick and timber lean-to additions that are not of special interest. The windows have iron frame fixed pane glazing, with stone lintels and sills. There are twin semi-circular arches over the mill race, and the central part of the east elevation is raised with a clerestory that houses the exhaust system. The north gable end has a projecting enclosed hoist and a large lean-to timber and corrugated iron canopy that serves as the loading shed. The west side features regularly spaced iron-framed windows under stone lintels, except for one enlarged window supported by a rolled steel joist. To the southwest, there is a lean-to structure made of corrugated iron and timber that is not of special interest. The south gable end has a lower gabled bay with a single window on each floor.

Internally, the mill has a largely timber construction, supported by cast iron columns on the ground floor that hold the original millstones located on the first floor. The timber floors are butted with iron tongues. The mill is powered by an American 'Little Giant' turbine installed in 1898 and a Francis twin turbine installed in 1914, with most of the machinery dating from 1914. The south end of the building contains facilities for washing, cleaning, and storing wheat, while the flour mill section is located at the north end. The second floor houses sifters from 1914, the first floor contains two purifiers from 1932, and the ground floor features roller mills, mostly dating from 1905.
