Description
The former stables and cartsheds with hayloft, located approximately 10 yards northeast of Cowlow Farmhouse, date back to 1832. The building is constructed of coursed squared rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with a clay tile roof featuring coped verges. It has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall, with the main range on the left and a projecting gabled wing on the right.
On the ground floor of the main range, there is a door, followed by a top-opening glazing bar window, another similar window opening, and a narrow window in the center. To the right, there are two blocked cartshed openings; the first has an inserted stable door, while the second has an inserted top-opening glazing bar window. The first floor features a loft door to the left of center, a small roughly central light with a datestone above, and a pitching eye with a hinged board door to the right.
The return wall of the wing has two top-opening glazing bar windows on the ground floor to the left and a door to the right. On the first floor, there is a pitching eye with a hinged board door to the left and a square loft opening with a board door to the loft on the right. The gable end of the wing includes a low lean-to extension made of concrete blocks with a corrugated roof.
