Description
The stables and cartshed, located about four metres north of the farmhouse at Roel Farm, date from the late 18th century. They feature random rubble walls with ashlar quoins and a stone slate roof. The stables have three windows and the cartshed is of similar length, with both structures having lofts.
The facade facing the farmhouse includes a central boarded door to the stable, which has a segmental head made of two shallow stones with a slightly projecting keystone. The head extends horizontally a short distance on either side. Flanking the door are semi-circular headed windows with plain ashlar frames and sills, also featuring slightly projecting keystones. There are no openings to the loft. To the left, there is a large buttress, and the eaves of the cartshed are slightly higher. The cartshed has an inserted boarded door with a timber lintel next to the buttress, and a blocked door with a timber lintel in the centre of the cartshed range. The entrance to the cartshed is located on the left return. On the right return of the stable, there is a shuttered opening with a stone lintel low down on the left for shovelling out manure, and another shuttered opening in the gable with a timber lintel. An owl hole is present in the gable of the higher section.
Inside, the stable has a cobbled floor and three heavy floor beams above. The loft, originally used as a granary, is accessed by a door in the rear wall that leads up to a dormer via a short flight of stone steps from a higher ground level. The dormer had collapsed before the time of the survey in 1986. The roof of the cartshed was not inspected, but access is similar, with the dormer still extant. The design reflects a conscious attempt at architectural style and the building forms a group with the farmhouse and barn nearby.
