Description

The Retreat is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with gritstone dressings and quoins to the east, and features a moulded stone coping to the north gable wall. The house has stone gable end stacks, with a large, stepped, external stack to the south. It is two storeys high and originally had three bays. The central section features a flush doorcase with a 19th-century glazed and panelled door. Flanking the door are glazing bar sashes in flush surrounds. Above, there are two irregular two-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows. A 20th-century window in a flush surround is located to the north. An attic window, recessed and chamfered, is visible in the south gable wall. This building demonstrates group value through its significant architectural characteristics.
