Description

This is a milepost from the early 19th century, made of cast iron. It features a circular shaft that rises to a cylinder with a moulded top, divided into panels by bead mouldings. The word 'LONDON' is inscribed in embossed lettering. The rest of the information, which was originally painted, is now illegible. This milepost was erected to serve the Chesterfield to Ashford Turnpike routeway, which opened in 1812.
