Description

The masonry weir, located to the east of New Bridge, dates from the early 19th century. It features a reverse 'S' shape and spans the River Derwent, constructed to serve Calver Mill. The weir has a massive embankment with a shallow saddleback at its peak and an incline down to the river level, which is lined with coursed squared gritstone blocks. The stones at the peak of the weir have diagonal sockets, now filled with stone, which were likely used for fixings to retain weir boards.
