Description
Calver Mill is a cotton mill that has been converted into the Sissons factory. It was built between 1803 and 1804 and features coursed squared gritstone, rock-faced gritstone, and ashlar. The roofs are hipped and made of stone slate and cement tile. The building has a T-plan layout with an additional 20th-century wing to the north that is not of special interest. It stands six storeys tall, with a two-storey late 19th-century wing to the west.
The south elevation consists of nine bays, with the middle two bays forming a projecting staircase and office wing. The ground floor is rock-faced, with large ashlar lintels creating continuous bands between smaller areas of coursed stone. Each bay has six tiers of glazing bar sash windows with projecting sills. On the ground floor, the west return wall of the staircase wing features a round-arched doorway with key and impost blocks, a plank door, and a traceried fanlight. There is also a 20th-century doorway with a steel hood. A sliding plank door is located in the first bay to the west. The eastern nine bays of the ground floor have a 1947 addition that is not of special interest. The staircase wing and its three-bay return elevations have similar glazing bar sashes. The late 19th-century wing to the west has six bays of similar glazing bar sashes across its two floors.
The north elevation originally had nineteen bays of glazing bar sashes, which are now interrupted by 20th-century additions. At each end of the elevation are octagonal 'tower' bays with a chamfer between each storey, which originally contained closets. The original goit ran through a segmental arch in the middle of the mill. The interior, which has been much altered, was originally of timber construction but now features later cast iron replacement pillars.
