Description
The former schoolroom at Stocking Farm is a building that dates from the early 19th century and has been repurposed as farm outbuildings. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone with ashlar dressings and quoins, topped with a cement tile roof that features a gabled bellcote on the south side. The building stands two storeys tall and has an east elevation with three irregular bays.
On the ground floor, there is a blocked round-arched doorway with key and impost blocks, which is now situated within a 20th-century lean-to that is not of special interest. To the left of this doorway is a segmental-arched cart entrance with a keyblock. Further left, a straight flight of stone steps, partly supported by two circular columns, leads up to a doorway that has a plain ashlar surround and a plank door. Adjacent to this doorway is a circular window with an ashlar surround, and to the right are two three-light windows featuring chamfered stone mullions and a transom.
The south gable end includes an inserted cart entrance with a timber lintel, and beneath the bellcote, there is a blocked round-arched window with a moulded impost band. The schoolroom was constructed after 1817 by Horatio Mason of Calver Mill as a Sunday School, and following the passing of the 1833 Factory Act, it was converted into the Mill School.
