Description
The wheelhouse south of Calver Mill is a redundant structure built between 1833 and 1834. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone with gritstone dressings and features a hipped Welsh slate roof. This single-storey rectangular building has a goit that enters at a higher level on the west side and exits at a lower level on the east side into a roughly semi-circular pool. The west elevation includes two segmental arches with a cutwater in between, while the east side has two segmental arches and five tall windows above, which contain small pane fixed lights. The two wheels that were originally part of the structure were removed during World War II. The wheelhouse was built as part of modifications to Calver Mill, which involved diverting the goit and removing the wheels from inside the mill.
