Description
Froggatt Bridge is a road bridge that dates from the late 17th century, with significant alterations made in the mid-19th century. It features an asymmetrical design with two unequal spans: the earlier lower arch is semi-circular and is separated by a pointed cutwater from the later, wider pointed arch to the northeast. The bridge is constructed from coursed and ashlar gritstone, with the later work displaying rockfaced stone and chamfered rustication. A dentilled band course runs along the heads of the arches, and above this is a parapet made of rusticated masonry with deep horizontal channelling. The stones of the pointed arch are also deeply channelled. The parapet is topped with massive ashlar copings that are chamfered, ending in low square piers with shallow pyramidal caps. Additionally, Froggatt Bridge is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
