Description
Brookhouses is a house, now divided into two, dating from the 17th century and altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed gritstone rubble with large quoins and gritstone dressings, topped with a stone slate roof. The building features ashlar diamond sectioned ridge stacks and a bracketed, moulded wooden eaves gutter. It has two storeys and a U-shaped plan with a gabled crosswing to the west and a double pile plan to the east.
On the south elevation, starting from the west, there is a three-light chamfered mullion window in the crosswing. Next to it is a single light semi-circular headed window adjacent to a chamfered doorcase with a massive quoined surround. The entrance features a plank door with two lights. Beyond this, there is a recessed and chamfered two-light mullion window, along with a formerly three-light, recessed and chamfered mullion window that has been filled with 20th-century small paned casements. Further east, there is a formerly five-light recessed and chamfered mullion window, now reduced to three lights with three glazing bar sashes. Additionally, there is another semi-circular headed window and, at the extreme east, an 18th-century flush opening with 20th-century small paned casements. Above the door in the crosswing, there is a four-light chamfered mullion window, and further east, there are two two-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows. Above the five-light window and the easternmost window, there are remnants of two recessed and chamfered windows that were made deeper in the 18th century, with large glazing bar sashes inserted. The east gable wall features a central stone porch with a four-light recessed and chamfered mullion window above it, as well as a blocked two-light similar window in the gable.
The interior has been much altered but retains several chamfered beams.
