Description

The garden walls, pergola, and gatepiers at Raenstor Close were built in 1911 by H. Ibberson. They are constructed from gritstone rubble, red brick, and coursed squared gritstone with gritstone dressings. The walls have an irregular layout, featuring a pair of walls on either side of the driveway to the north of the house, running from west to east and ending in a semi-circular pair of walls to the south with central gates.

To the west of these walls, a pergola extends south towards the house, connecting to another wall that runs at right angles to the east, featuring central gate piers. There are low gritstone gatepiers with banded rustication set in a limestone rubble wall to the north of the driveway, with a similar pier to the west where the wall changes direction.

Opposite this, there is a tall stepped gritstone rubble wall, lined with red brick on the other side, featuring large gritstone piers at every level. Each pier has a narrow semi-circular headed niche with an elongated raised keystone. Similar niches are found on either side of the curving entrance walls, which display panels of stylized relief carvings of foliage and beasts between plain pilasters, with elaborate iron gates at the center.

To the west, there is a recessed section of wall with a pair of adjoining semi-circular headed arches, featuring a relief carving of Orpheus on the central pillar, providing a view through to the pergola avenue. This avenue consists of square gritstone piers with intermediate semi-circular headed archways, each with elongated keystones. Attached to the east, about halfway to the house, is a wall made of red brick with a gritstone base, bands, and square piers at the center and middle that support timber beams, with the central piers featuring molded cornices. This structure is included for its group value only.
