Description

Aldern House, built around 1820, is a two-storey house located on Baslow Road in Bakewell. Constructed from ashlar sandstone with a Welsh slate roof, it features a symmetrical facade with a three-window range and a rear wing. The building has a plinth and large quoins. Nosed steps lead up to a Doric stone porch with a plain entablature. The doorway has outer doors set within a corniced stone architrave and a glazed inner door. On either side of the porch are canted bay windows with stop-chamfered surrounds, 1/1 sash windows, and cornices. The first floor has 1/1 sashes in ashlar surrounds, linked by a lintel band beneath a bold eaves cornice. The roofline is finished with a balustraded parapet featuring square balusters and panelled dies, along with corniced ashlar end stacks. Inside, the stair hall boasts a late 19th-century tiled floor and a late 19th-century staircase with panelled newels, a moulded handrail, and a balustrade of two mid-rails connected by spindles, along with geometric ceiling panels.
