Description

The Gardener's House and attached walls, located to the northeast of Ashford Hall, date from the late 18th century. Constructed from ashlar gritstone with gritstone dressings and quoins, the building features a hipped roof made of graduated slate with lead flashings. It has stone ridge stacks with simple cornices, a plain eaves band, and a shallow plinth. The house is two storeys high and consists of two bays.

At the center, there is a full-height tetrastyle portico in antis, supported by Tuscan columns and topped with a plain pediment. The walls between the bases of the columns are shallow. On either side of the portico, there are doorcases with stepped architraves. The house has Venetian windows with a plain stringcourse at the impost level on either side, featuring flush aedicules, except for the central light which has a stepped design. The windows are fitted with glazing bar sashes. Above these, there are diocletian windows with stepped aedicules on either side, and central glazing bar sashes with small pane side casements.

Attached to the house are curving espalier walls made of red brick, with courses of gritstone on the west side and regular blocks of gritstone on the east side, both topped with flat copings. There are doorways on either side of the house, with steps leading up to the eastern door. At each end of the walls, square gritstone piers with moulded cornices are topped by ball finials.
