Description
Ashford Hall is a small country house built around 1785, with additions made around 1840. The building features ashlar stone with gritstone dressings, and the sides and rear are constructed from coursed squared gritstone. It has a slate roof behind a balustered parapet and stone ridge stacks, along with a bracketed eaves cornice.
The house has five bays and three storeys. The ground floor is rusticated and includes a central doorcase supported by Tuscan columns, featuring an Adam-style frieze with a dentilled pediment above. Below the doorcase is a moulded semi-circular headed arch with double glazed doors. On either side of the entrance, there are pairs of blind semi-circular arches with full-height glazing bar sashes. A plain stringcourse runs at impost level, with another stringcourse above it, followed by a band of flush stonework that is interrupted by six baluster pilasters beneath each window.
Above this, there is a plain sill band over five pedimented glazing bar sashes, which have moulded architraves and alternating segmental and pointed pediments. Further up, five shallow glazing bar sashes are set within moulded aedicules. To the south, there is an early 19th-century conservatory featuring a semi-circular headed central door flanked by two full-height, semi-circular headed windows, and a raised fanlight at the ridge.
