Description

The Church of St Michael is a church that has 12th century remains but was largely rebuilt between 1882 and 1883 by F J Robinson. It is constructed of coursed rubble limestone with gritstone dressings and features slate roofs with stone ridge tiles. The church has three stone coped gables with plain kneelers, and the east gable is topped with a ridge cross.

The structure includes a west tower, nave, and a lower chancel. The tower, built entirely in 1882, is designed in the Norman style and has angle quoins. It features a single west lancet window and small square windows with chamfered surrounds on the north and south sides. The bell stage includes a string course below and a parapet, with twin bell openings framed by a superarch on each facade.

On the south side of the nave, there is a small rectangular window and a much-restored 12th century doorway with two orders; the inner order is plain and chamfered, while the outer order has a double zigzag design with a triangular floral motif and a bead and lozenge motif. A 19th century plank door is present here. To the right of the doorway is a round-arched window and a 19th century aedicule wall memorial. The south side of the chancel has two plain 19th century two-light square-headed windows, and the east window is a crude 19th century design with three lights featuring Y-tracery and trefoiled circles.

The north side of the nave has three small round-headed windows, and at the junction of the nave and chancel, there is a buttress with three set-offs and a chimney. Inside, the church has a plain two-stepped tower arch and a chancel arch with projecting 12th century jambs and imposts, topped by a 14th century arch with a step and a chamfer. There is a small piscina with a triangular head and roll moulding in the north wall of the chancel. The floors are tiled from the 19th century, and the pulpit, also from the 19th century, is richly decorated with pinnacles and a crocheted ogee design.
