Description
Hanson Grange is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century to the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble limestone with gritstone dressings and features a slate roof that is hipped at one end and has two stone coped gables with moulded kneelers. The building has a T-plan and is two storeys high.
On the east elevation, there are angle quoins and a central doorway with a raised stone surround, which includes a keystone and projecting imposts. The doorway has a semi-circular top with a fanlight and is fitted with a raised and fielded five-panelled door. To the right of the door, there is a glazing bar sash window with a stone surround, and a similar window is located above it. To the left, there is a projecting bay that contains two similar windows and a first-floor stringcourse.
The south elevation features an external stack and, to the right, a blocked three-light mullioned and transomed window on the first floor. To the left, there is a single-light window with a transom and a three-light mullioned and transomed window above it. Further left, there are a blocked single-light window and a blocked three-light mullioned window at half height, with a similar blocked three-light window above. Several of the windows on the south side have dripmoulds.
Hanson Grange is located on the former site of a grange belonging to Buxton Abbey, and it is suggested that earlier windows in the basement may be linked to this history. The novelist Nat Gould, who lived from 1857 to 1919, resided here.
