Description

This is an 18th-century threshing barn and granary with attached gingang and animal shelter sheds, located at East Kirknewton Farm. The building is constructed of random rubble stone with dressed stone surrounds, and incorporates both pantiled and Welsh slate roofs.

The main barn and shelter sheds extend in a range to the rear. To the left of the central gingang is a rear range featuring three elliptical arches and four slatted windows that illuminate a granary above. To the right of the gingang is a stable-type door leading to a byre, with ventilation slits on the first floor. The rear range has a steeply-pitched, hipped roof.

The central gingang is round, supported by square dressed stone piers with random rubble walling between them. It has boarded double doors and a half-shuttered blacksmith-style window. The roof is conical, constructed of Welsh slate and featuring a complex roof structure.

A projecting shelter shed on the right has walls that noticeably batter inwards. It has a hipped roof covered with pantiles. A projecting L-plan shelter shed on the left features three cast-iron columns and a gabled Welsh slate roof.

Additional farm buildings immediately to the south are not considered to be of special historic or architectural interest.
