Description
The Lanton Memorial is an obelisk likely erected in 1827 in memory of John Davison of Lanton by his brother Alexander Davison of Swarland Park. An additional inscription notes the death of Alexander Davison in 1828. The memorial is constructed from dressed whinstone with a sandstone ashlar plinth and quoins. It features a square base approximately 10 feet high, topped by a tall obelisk, both with flush quoins made from contrasting stone.
At the top of the base, an ashlar strip is inscribed with "John Davison 1827." A similar strip about 3 feet up the obelisk bears the inscription "Alexander Davison 1795," which may indicate the year he purchased Swarland Park.
On the south side of the base, there is a marble tablet dedicated by Sir William Davison of Lanton, Knight of the Illustrious Guelphic Order of Hanover. The tablet commemorates his beloved father, Alexander Davison Esquire of Swarland Park, highlighting his private virtues and distinguished public service. Alexander Davison passed away on December 19th, 1828, at the age of 80.
Notably, Alexander Davison served as chandler to Lord Nelson and erected another similar obelisk in 1806 near Swarland in memory of Nelson. The Lanton Memorial is a prominent feature in the landscape.
