Description

Grandy's Knowe Farmhouse is an early 18th-century building that was constructed onto the east end of an earlier bastle house. The farmhouse features renewed windows from around 1860 and is built of rubble with a 20th-century asbestos roof. The right end stack is made of rubble, and the left gable and stack are partly fallen. The structure has two storeys and three bays. The central entrance has a renewed door with a chamfered dressed stone surround, flanked by six-pane sash windows. On the first floor, there are two small six-pane sashes and a small rectangular light above the door, with all windows having timber lintels. The farm buildings to the right are not of interest. The bastle to the left displays setbacks for the first and attic floors on its east wall, and the rear elevation has an outshut that overlaps the bastle. The interior has been altered, featuring a first-floor fireplace with a chamfered surround, two upper cruck roof trusses with slender tapering blades, and the eastern truss has scarfed blades. The collars overlap the blades to support the purlins, and there is no ridge beam. The building was empty and derelict at the time of the survey.
