Description
Appleton Mill farmhouse and the attached outbuildings to the right and rear are a millhouse and mill that have been converted into a farmhouse with additional buildings. They date from around 1760, with a 19th-century extension at the rear. The structure is made of dressed sandstone, featuring herring-bone tooling on the front, and has a pantile roof. Originally, it had a two-cell, direct-entry plan, with a later kitchen and dairy extension to the rear and mill buildings to the right.
The farmhouse is two stories high and has a symmetrical front with three windows. It has a stone plinth and chamfered milled quoins. The original central entry was replaced around 1980 with a third ground floor window, and the current entry is located at the rear of a former mill chamber to the right. The windows are 12-pane sashes set in raised surrounds with keystones. There is a raised band at the first floor and a cavetto-moulded eaves course. The gables are coped, and there are kneelers and end stacks.
Inside, the ground floor rooms feature exposed quarter-round moulded beams. There is a fireplace with voussoirs and a triple keystone in the ground floor room to the left. The mill building to the right predates the farmhouse, which replaced an earlier house on the same site. Some remnants of the mill wheel and its machinery remain, although the drive shaft is no longer present.
