Description
SE 79 NW APPLETON-LE-MOORS HAMLEY LANE (south-east side, off)
3/1 Appleton Mill farmhouse and attached outbuildings to right and rear II
Millhouse and mill, now farmhouse and attached buildings. C1760 with C19 extension to rear. Dressed sandstone, herring-bone tooling to front; pantile roof. Originally 2-cell, direct-entry plan, with later kitchen and dairy extension to rear and mill buildings to right. 2-storey, symmetrical 3-window front. Stone plinth. Chamfered milled quoins. The original central entry was replaced c1980 by a third ground floor window. Present entry is to the rear of a former mill chamber to right. 12-pane sashes throughout in raised surrounds with keystones. Raised first-floor band and cavetto-moulded eaves course. Coped gables and kneelers. End stacks. Interior: exposed quarter-round moulded beams to all ground floor rooms. Fireplace of voussoirs and triple keystone in ground floor room to left. The mill building to right predates the house which however replaced an earlier house on the same site. The mill wheel and some of its machinery remains, but not the drive shaft.
