Description
The New Inn is a public house located on Maltongate in Thornton Dale, dating from the late 18th century, with later alterations and an extension. It is constructed of dressed limestone featuring painted chamfered quoins, topped with a slate roof and brick stacks. The building has a three-cell, hearth-passage plan, with a rear wing to the right and an added outshut.
The front of the building is two storeys high and has four windows. There is a left-of-centre four-panel door with an overlight. To the left, there was originally a yard opening, which is now blocked by a canted bay that features eight- and twelve-pane sash windows and a moulded cornice. The remaining windows are sixteen-pane sashes, all with painted stone sills. Each opening has painted flat arches with keystones. The building has coped gables and shaped kneelers, with stacks at the ends and left of centre.
