Description
The Church of St Botolph is a Grade II listed building located in Carlton, dating from 1886, although it is noted to be dated 1896-1897 by Pevsner. Designed by Temple Moore, the church is constructed of tooled sandstone ashlar with a clay tiled main roof, stone-flagged aisles, and a porch. It showcases the Art-and-Craft Decorated style and features an aisled nave that incorporates a west tower, a south porch, and a short chancel.
The plain tower has two stages, with the lower stage being very tall. It includes a north-east staircase that projects like a buttress, square-headed windows, and a clock above. The bell stage features two pairs of cusped, ogee-headed openings, a top cornice, and battlements. The gabled porch has an oak-framed entrance. The aisle and clerestory windows are paired and cusped, with the aisle windows having ogee heads. The chancel has very small north and south windows, while the east window is large and traceried.
