Description

Jessamine Cottage and Newton Hall Cottage are two houses located in Upper Allithwaite, dating back to 1673. Newton Hall Cottage features exposed narrow stone inscribed with 'ROGER ; BARROW : HOVS : AP : 24 : 1673'. The exterior is roughcast with a slate roof, and the building is two storeys high with four bays. The first bay is gabled and forms the end of Jessamine Cottage. This bay has a pentice under a drip course and a projecting bay window to the right. Most windows are sashed with vertical glazing bars, including those in the third bay which have horns. The ground floor has two windows, while the second bay on the first floor has a pivoted window. The first bay has windows with small-paned fixed glazing and opening lights. The entrance to the second bay features a wide-boarded door with a latch. There is a cross-axial stack, and the left return of the two bays has windows with small-paned fixed glazing and opening lights, including two on the ground floor and one above on the first floor. The entrance on this side also has a wide-boarded door with a latch and a small casement window to the right. The gable-end stacks are partially projecting and partially corbelled. Inside, there is a stone fireplace with a corbelled keyed lintel and a plank and muntin partition wall separating the two cottages.
