Description
Askham Gate and the adjoining barn are a farmhouse and barn dating from the late 18th century, which incorporates a doorway from an earlier house. The farmhouse features painted incised stucco with V-jointed quoins on a chamfered plinth, topped by a graduated green slate roof with banded red sandstone chimney-stacks. The barn is constructed of mixed sandstone and limestone rubble, covered by a Welsh slate roof.
The building is two storeys high and has three bays, with a left rear right-angle two-storey, single-bay extension and a right two-storey L-shaped barn. The main entrance is a top-glazed panelled door set in a painted stone surround, accessed by steps. The farmhouse has sash windows with glazing bars, also in painted stone surrounds. The extension features a panelled door in a rusticated surround with a keyed lintel, along with double sash windows in painted stone surrounds.
Connecting the house to the barn is a short wall that includes a 17th-century chamfered doorway, with the lintel inscribed "I&EL 1683." The barn itself has plank doors in stone surrounds and 20th-century casement windows, as well as a central loft doorway. The left return wall of the barn has a segmental-arched cart entrance.
