Description

BROUGHTON EAST FIELD BROUGHTON SD 38 SE 2/15 Former stables approx 50m to east of Broughton Lodge (q.v) G.V. II

Former stables. 1780-90. Dressed stone with ashlar south facade and hipped slate roof. 2 storeys, 5 bays, the central bay breaks forward under pediment; end bays project under hipped gables. Inner return of 1st bay and 2nd and 4th bays have sashed windows with glazing bars. Central bay has elliptical-headed entrance with paired doors with strap hinges; plain entrances next to windows. Inner return to 5th bay has inserted garage door. 1st floor has ventilation slots. 1st floor has lunette with small-paned fixed glazing and opening light to central bay; end bays have round-headed openings with corbelled sills and shutters. Left return has sashed window with glazing bars; right return has 1st floor entrance up stone steps; rear has lateral stack. Interior has some remaining stalls with elliptical arcade on timber columns and some loose boxes.
