Description

The stables at Dunskey House date from the earlier 19th century and are designed in a U-plan, featuring a single storey with an attic. The building is constructed from whinstone with sandstone ashlar dressings.

On the south elevation, there are square-plan gatepiers marking the entrance to the courtyard, with gabled bays on the outer left and right. The left side has windows at both the ground and attic levels, while the right side has a window at the ground level only. There are also two grille openings on the left.

The north elevation features a near central timber stable door with a window to the left. To the right, there are five square grille openings, and to the left, four square grille openings with a loading bay above. The outer left has single windows at both the ground and attic levels, with the attic windows breaking the eaves to form gables. There is a later harled gabled addition on the outer right.

On the courtyard side, the south elevation has an advanced gabled porch with a segmental arch opening at the ground level. There is a loading bay at the gable, with single windows flanking the porch and a timber door to the outer right.

The west elevation features an advanced M-gabled bay on the outer left, with a small timber window and a timber stable door. There are two square grille openings, a timber door at the re-entrant angle, and a small window to the outer right. The left side has two single windows, with a single window aligned above in the attic.

On the east elevation, there are two single windows right of centre, flanked by timber doors. The attic has two pairs of windows in the M-gable, with a timber door and a small window at ground level on the outer left. There are two-leaf boarded timber doors at the re-entrant angle, along with a single window and two-leaf boarded timber doors at the advanced M-gabled bay on the outer right.

The building features 8- and 12-pane timber sash and case windows, rooflights, and a grey slate roof with stone skews, skewputts, and stacks at the ridge, gable, and wallhead. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.

Inside, the stables have timber stalls with curved ironwork and ball finials on the posts.
