Description
This building is a barn located to the north of The Ashes. It is believed to have originally served as a gatehouse that incorporated a Catholic chapel, but it is now used as a barn. There is a plaque with initials and the date "P" above the north door, and the initials and date "1737 RP" are found on a truss in the roof, although the main structure is likely older. The barn features stone rubble walls with a plinth on the north side and a graduated greenslate roof with a stone ridge and a ball finial on the east gable. It has an L-shaped design with five bays. There are cart entrances on each side with segmental heads, stone voussoirs, and slate drips. The south entrance is now blocked and originally opened into a sunken area that has since been filled in. The north entrance has 19th-century boarded doors, a small window to the left, and two windows to the right—one with stone voussoirs, a keystone, and a slate drip, alternating with two small blocked openings. Above, there is a loft entrance with large voussoirs, a slate drip, and a boarded door. The roof contains collar-trusses and two levels of purlins. There is a 20th-century single-storey lean-to timber carport with a plastic sheet roof on the south side, which is not of interest.
