Description
The Tower of the Chapel of St Margaret, located on Main Street in Staveley, is a Grade II* listed structure. It is believed to have been founded in 1388 and is likely from the late 14th century or early 15th century, with some later alterations. The tower is constructed of rubble with limestone dressings, featuring 20th-century limestone pinnacles and coping along the parapet.
The west doorway has moulded jambs and a round-arched head beneath a hood-mould with defaced labels. Above this, there is a square-headed window with three trefoiled lights, also with a hood mould and labels, flanked by small round-headed niches. The bell opening has a stone surround and slate louvres. The gable displays a clock commemorating Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, along with a plaque dated 1887. Additionally, there is a plaque honoring the men of Staveley who served in the South African campaign from 1900 to 1901. On the east wall, a square-headed window of two trefoiled lights has been inserted into a blocked opening. The church itself was demolished in 1865.
