Description
Shap Abbey Farmhouse is a farmhouse that may date back to the 16th century, as it features 16th-century mullioned windows in a mid-19th-century drawing by Thomas Bland. It was remodelled in the late 19th century, and the attached byre range is likely a 17th or 18th-century addition. The building is constructed from re-used stone from the Abbey, with the house made of coursed blocks and quoins, while the byres are built of slobbered rubble. It has graduated slate roofs, with a wing and lean-tos at the rear of the house.
The farmhouse is two storeys tall, and the byre range has an L-shaped plan that adjoins the south end of the house. Originally, the house had four bays but was extended by one bay into the byre range, and the roof was raised during the remodelling. The front features a 20th-century part-glazed door set within a re-used medieval doorcase that has a semicircular head and continuous roll-moulding, along with a decorative medieval corbel above. To the right of the door is a sash window, while to the left are two sashes and a garage door. Above, there are five sash windows, all with 16 panes and set in 19th-century chamfered surrounds.
On the north side, there is a 16-pane sash window in a double-chamfered surround, also with a decorative medieval corbel above. The ends of the building have rendered chimneys. The byres feature four doors (two of which are now blocked with inserted windows) and three windows, along with two loft doors and two blocked windows above. There is also a stable door in the east return.
