Description
Grovelands and the adjoining house are two houses built around 1760 for Gilpin Sawrey. They are constructed of roughcast stone with a slate roof and stand two storeys tall, with the first bay rising to three storeys. The first bay features 20th-century casement windows, while the second and third bays have sash windows with single glazing bars. The ground floor of the second bay includes vertical glazing bars, and the third bay has a canted bay window. There are attic skylights as well. The entrances have panelled doors, with the door in the first bay being from the 20th century. The building includes a cross-axial stack and a gable-end stack. Grovelands is notable for being part of a planned town square, which is an unusual feature in a Cumbrian village.
