Description
The Market Hall, built around 1760 for Gilpin Sawrey, is located in Broughton-in-Furness. It is constructed of roughcast stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has four bays. The ground floor showcases a round-arched arcade supported by square piers with plain capital blocks. The arches are detailed with keys and hoodboards, and the openings now contain infill of entrances and small-paned glazing.
On the first floor, there are paired round-headed windows with keys, sashes, and glazing bars. A central clock face, set in a square architrave and dated 1766, is prominently displayed, along with a lantern on a bracket at one end. The bell turret at the ridge is square, featuring round arches, a pyramidal roof, a ball finial, and a weather vane adorned with hunting figures. The Market Hall was built as part of a planned town square, making it an unusual feature in a Cumbrian village.
