Description

This is a terrace of six houses built around 1760 for Gilpin Sawrey, located on the north-east side of The Square in Broughton-in-Furness. The houses are constructed of roughcast stone and topped with a slate roof. They rise three storeys high and feature nine bays, with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th houses each having one bay. The top cornice is missing from the 6th house. Most of the windows are sash windows, which have vertical glazing bars.

The first house, known as Laural Bank, has casement windows on the second floor and a central entrance with a six-fielded-panel door that includes two glazed panels. The second house, Rydal House, features a central entrance with a blind round-head and a reeded archivolt with a key. The third house has an entrance with a half-glazed door and a small-paned basement window. The fourth house, Homeleigh, and the fifth house, Sunny Brae, both have casement windows and small-paned basement windows, along with half-glazed doors. The sixth house, Lathom House, includes basement windows and an entrance.

The terrace has gable-end stacks and four cross-axial stacks. The rear of the houses displays varied fenestration, retaining some sash windows, small-paned fixed glazing, and tall stair windows. This terrace was built as part of a planned town square, which is an unusual feature in a Cumbrian village.
