Description
The obelisk and stocks in The Square, Broughton-in-Furness, were erected in 1810 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of King George III, while the date of the stocks is uncertain. The structure is made of ashlar and features four square steps leading up to a plinth, which has a brass plate on the southeast side. The obelisk itself has a torus moulding at its base. The stocks consist of two round-headed posts with slots on the inner faces for wooden boards, which have been replaced at a later date. The Square is a planned development, which is an unusual characteristic for a village in Cumbria.
