Description
The Square Cafe, Hillside, and Aitken House are three houses, one of which is now part of a cafe, likely built around 1760 for Gilpin Sawrey. The buildings are constructed of roughcast stone and topped with a slate roof. They are two storeys high with five bays, although the fifth bay has three storeys. Most of the windows are sashed, with some featuring vertical glazing bars. The ground floor includes a casement window in the first bay and a bay window with a hipped roof in the second bay. The entrance to The Square Cafe is accessed by steps and has a lean-to canopy, while there is a basement entrance to the left. The entrances feature half-glazed doors. There are gable-end stacks and two cross-axial stacks. Inside The Square Cafe, there is a staircase with a Chinese pattern balustrade and two-panel doors that have some H-L hinges. This building was part of a planned town square, which is an unusual feature for a village in Cumbria.
