Description
Under Howe is a farmhouse with an adjoining barn and former stables, now a private house. It dates from the late 17th century, with alterations dated and inscribed over the entrance as D. & E.C. 1752. The building is constructed of whitewashed rubble on large projecting plinth stones and features a graduated greenslate roof with rendered chimney stacks. It is two storeys high and consists of two bays, with a single-bay former stable on the left, now part of the house, and a lower right-angled barn at the front, creating an overall L-shape.
The main entrance has a top-glazed plank door in a painted stone surround with an inscribed lintel, and it is sheltered by a 20th-century porch. The house has sash windows in original surrounds, although the stone mullions have been removed. The window to the left of the entrance has been enlarged, and there is a narrow fire window beyond it. The former stable features a 20th-century window in its former entrance, with a 19th-century sash window above. The barn has central plank doors in a stone surround under a wooden lintel, a plank door to the right, a loft door above, and a small casement window. There is also an enlarged garage entrance to the left.
Inside the house, there is a beamed ceiling and a heck partition with a cupboard beside the fireplace. A bedroom has a panelled partition with an integral panelled door that may date from the early 18th century. There is a 20th-century extension to the right of the house and a porch to the rear, which are not of interest.
